Some women wanted Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib because he was just amazing overall. The same was said of his future wife Aaminah (ra).
Some though, knew what it was truly. That this man was carrying the Last Prophet in his loins and the Divine Light shone between his eyes.
Sometime before his wedding, the eventual father of the Prophet – Abdullah was to be sacrificed. In his stead, a hundred camels were slaughtered. A handsome cost even in this day and age.
On his wedding day many women were disappointed. This one lady made a last desperate attempt with an offer of a hundred camels as a gift, as the groom was walking with his father Abdul Muttalib.
He responded with clear grace, in poetry. Roughly translated, and of course absent of its poetic form, he said..
As for what’s impermissible, it is death without it,
As for what’s permissible, it is clear to me this is not,
The noble defends himself from transgression and defends his beliefs,
So how then this matter which you have sought for.
He went on..
It indeed has been ordained on the nobles in every land,
That as nobles of the land we are distinguished,
And that my father the one of dignity and prestige,
Alludes you to that which is raised and that which is debased.
