What he said did not put a smile on our faces.
The man pictured is Habib Ali bin Abu Bakr from the family of Bin-Shaykh Abu Bakr Bin-Salem. He’s known by some as Habib Smiley. One of the senior teachers at Dar al-Mustafa and among the closest to Habib Omar Bin-Hafidz.
Some weeks ago there was a family day for Malaysian married students in the Hadhramout Valley at a swimming pool centre, where men were in one pool and the ladies were in the pool house next to ours. Kids were everywhere.
Habib Ali was invited and spoke briefly, sharing some advice. As always he was smiling throughout.
What he said, a few times, made some of us stop smiling temporarily as we reflected upon what we heard considering we may be included among those he was referring to.
What’s important though is that this is the sort of education students receive here. Keywords such as character, self-reflection, compassion, etc.
‘Such are men. Some of us get bothered when our wives disobey us, when our children don’t follow what we say. But we forget to consider how much we have disobeyed God. Should that not be what bothers us most?’
