People of love.

Today is the last day of the year, as well as the annual celebration for the opening of our school many years ago. It also the time when our headmaster’s father was abducted (and disappeared) by the Socialist government many more years ago.

It is common here, and very much so in Malay culture especially before present times, to recite a Mawlid to commemorate almost any celebration. A Mawlid is a recitation of the eulogy (the life) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Such gatherings across the world (and across centuries) draw many people and through it they grow up learning about his life as well as increasing the connection of their hearts with him.

You’ll find some Muslims that speak of him as a matter of fact, or quote, or argument, and then there’s others who speak as a matter of love. It’s common to see some men moved to tears.

This Mawlid here was composed by Habib Muhammad bin Salem Bin-Hafidz, father to our headmaster, Habib Omar. It is not commonly heard, hence why I’ve recorded it. If anyone knows the name, please share it in the comment box below.

This section is where the gathering would stand up and recite together, as oppose to other sections where a reciter would do so alone (although endings of each bait of the poetic lines may be echoed by all).

At dusk today the Islamic New Year begins. Later tonight the celebration continues. Among other things, the school is hosting an exhibition or contest of poetry reciters if I’m not mistaken. It’ll be nice to see more of ‘pantun’ back home.

Meanwhile, here’s some love. Enjoy.
