I visited a relative in prison recently.
Before leaving Tareem for the holidays, I asked Habib Omar Bin-Hafidz, what should I focus on during the two months break back home. Teach, learn or put together programs? He replied, go and visit people where they are.
There are many things that can be shared from the experience at the prison. I think only one is worth highlighting here for now. And I’m clear this is not said apologetically or in a compensative manner.
It is this:
My cousin is in a fortunate position when I thought about other people. He has a direct taste of his actions to its consequences. And more so, time to reflect. All of which allows one to at least, not be in a state of ignorance.
Some of us go through our lives committing mistakes, sins and such, and then diluting, shifting or denying responsibility. Sometimes we may be absolutely clueless and perhaps think we’re doing good things all these years. And then unfortunately at some point ignore, deny or rebut when we are alerted, corrected or reminded of the wrong. Only to have a nasty wake up call on the day everyone is definitively Judged.
Anyhow, it’s not to say everyone needs prison time. Some of us just need good counsel.
Second thing to consider is that some terrible wrongs the law does not cover to begin with, thus the regular wrongdoers like us, won’t end up with perhaps any consequences in this life. Meaning some people go to prison only due to the category of wrong they commit.
Meanwhile the rest of us get self-righteous and continue to judge them despite them already being judged by the law. As we attempt to improve ourselves, perhaps that energy is better spent helping them improve too, as they are after all members of our community too.
*In an attempt to keep the writing short, I’ve removed additional notes from the main text and placed it in the Comment box below. Please read there for you who are with interest.

During the visit he asked me if I was familiar with a book he’s reading now in prison. Many others too have asked me about this life-changing book. Key to the Garden by Habib Ahmad Mashoor al-Haddad.
‘..a direct taste of his actions to its consequences..’ : Hassan @ Charles Le Gai Eaton in King of the Castle wrote about something similar on farmers compared to government officials and corporates bureaucrats. Do check out that amazing book.
