I got schooled in the school’s Finance Office.
It’s the size of a standard bedroom. The office has three windows. One for foreign exchange, another for deposits and last one for payment. It’s all one long counter with a door at the end for the officers to enter and exit.
*I had written in passing about this office before. See below in the Comment box for the link.
Our annual visas needed to be renewed so I was there to pay for it. The door was open so I stood and leaned by it instead of going through ‘the window’. The friendly officer handed me the receipt, explaining what it is and for me to keep. My right hand took it.
He then handed the government papers, explaining what it is and that it’s for the student office upstairs. As I extended my hand to take it, while seating he bent his wrist thus moving it away from me. Then he offered me to take it again be re-bending his wrist. As I did, he repeated the previous action.
This happened three times before I figured out what was wrong.
I smiled and apologized for trying to receive it with my left hand, explaining that I write with my left. He smiles and says ‘that’s not a problem. But when giving and receiving things, like all good things, we do with our right.’
This is an administrative officer teaching a lesson. I don’t know where to begin to explain how the teachers are like.
Time and again when people discuss, criticize the education system, I contend that if the philosophy toward education is not clear and not right, then we’re just shooting blanks at the wrong target by obsessing about the ‘system.’ And whatever answer we find for the system, it won’t be long before we start arguing about how it is the wrong answer.
Pic: tea on this balcony taught me many things. Alone and with company. I hope if you were one of some who drank a few cups here with me, learned something too.
