‘Who cares if they call me a Shaykh. Or call me an arsehole. What matters..’
This is a matter I’ve heard among those who attend programs organized for Muslims, as well as those invited to speak at them.
For the people in various countries, they may at time wonder “how come this young chap is being referred to on the poster as, ‘ustaz’, or graver than that, ‘shaykh?’”
What many people don’t realize is that this is often a liberty taken by the organizer of the program and not the speaker. Either way, it’s something I feel some people go on their wits end deliberating about instead of occupying themselves with what truly benefits, be it to attend the program or otherwise.
For the students of sacred knowledge, the ones I’ve met, are concerned about being overrated (with regards to this subject), so to speak. This is for an array of reasons. One of which is because the teachers they learn from in the madrasahs are mostly referred to as ustaz and yet in their home country, their people call them shaykhs – for example.
But that’s not the point here. And this point is relevant to all, regardless whether they are speakers, mere attendees or neither.
‘Who cares if they call me a Shaykh. Or call me an arsehole. Who cares? Call me whatever.
What matters is, when I’m alone in the middle of the night, praying and speaking to Him, what does He call me?’
*Pic is of one of the men in Tareem, who in his own way, often teach us the point above. I posted a video of him recently FYR.
